Pirate radio is a form of radio that is commonly know as illegal broadcasting. pirate radio has been used for many purposes, but the most commonly know is the illegal broadcasting of music1. many stations began in Europe, especially Great Britian, many stations began broadcasting on large boats in international waters, to get around certain rules and regulations. while they were in international waters, it was harder for the government to stop them from freely broadcasting.
PIRATERADIO PIONEER
One of the original off coast pirate radio station was Radio Caroline, this station was founded in the 1964 by Ronan O'Rahilly. He created this radio station to help unestablished bands be discovered and heard. Before the radio station Ronan was a jazz club owner, he also helped many bands get started including the Rolling Stones2.
CONTRIBUTIONS
New music- many bands wouldn't have had a chance if this radio station didn't exist, unestablised bands didn't get played on the radio, which meant that new bands weren't being discovered.
Continued freedom on the radio- there are still pirate radio stations today, it has been 46 years and the pirate radio stations are still broadcasting, although some governments have tried to eliminate them, like in the 1970's3 when the English government tried to stop Radio Caroline.
